| The citizens of the US are growing more and more aware of the environmental impact we have on our states, country , and the world. The US government has created agencies that inform citizens whether or not there new appliances meet the requirements of Energy Star or other programs that grade the energy efficiency of appliances. Energy Star in particular is a joint effort between the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Department of Energy. The purpose of the joint program between these two agencies is to "protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices."The Energy Star website proudly reports that "Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved enough energy in 2009 alone to avoid greenhouse emissions equivalent to those from 30 million cars - all while saving nearly 17 billion on their utility bills." Whether you are in the process of new construction for your home or business , or simply replacing old appliances that are worn out, it is worth your time to find an energy star compliant appliance. Making energy efficient choices for your home or business can reduce your energy bills by as much as 1/3rd and not to mention reduce your footprint on our environment . If your furnace, air conditioning unit, or any other appliances are not in need of repair you can still save money on your energy costs and also reduce your footprint on our environment. The simplest way to save energy is to turn off lights in rooms that you are not using, most of us are guilty of leaving lights on in rooms that are not being used. The savings from keeping lights off in unused rooms will not be huge , but it will add up so start reminding yourself and your family to turn off the lights. Another great way to save energy in your home is to reduce the amount your air conditioner or heating unit cycles on and off during the day. You may be saying how do I reduce the number of cycles that my air conditioning or heating unit makes? It is a lot easier than you think . You can do this by adjusting the temperature in your home or business a few degrees, which will cause you heating or air conditioning unit to run less cycles. When using your air conditioning unit start out keeping your home , apartment, or business at your normal setting for the first couple of days. Then set the temperature a few degrees warmer each day until it is uncomfortable in your home or office . Once you reach the point that you are uncomfortable, set the temperature a few degrees lower and you will find that the temperature you can live with comfortably will be higher than you think . During the winter months or any other time of the year you use your heater it is possible to accomplish energy savings the same way. To save money with your heater you pretty much just need to do the opposite of what you did to save money with your air conditioning unit. Simply lower the temperature that you normally set your thermostat too when using your heater by a couple of degrees a day. When you find yourself too cold, simply turn the thermostat up a little bit. In conclusion if you need new appliances make sure you look for the energy star logo, otherwise you may be better served to look to the thermostat and light switches to help save your pocketbook.
